Ween busted out “Boing” for the first time since 1994 during their concert Saturday in Philadelphia. The show was the second of the band’s two-night stand at The Met.
“We just learned this tonight — relearned it,” guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo told the audience prior to the bust out. Adding, “This song is from The Pod. It’s short and sweet. It’s called ‘Boing.’ It’s about a little bong.”
Ween had played at least 760 shows since “Boing” was last played by the band on November 8, 1994. The song from their 1991 studio album, The Pod, had just 16 known performances prior to Saturday’s bust out in Philly. Ween followed the “Boing” break out with another The Pod rarity, delivering the fourth rendition of the recently revived “Can U Taste The Waste?”
The pair of The Pod tunes came about a third of the way into the single-set show. Deaner, fellow co-founder Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, along with bassist Dave Dreiwitz, drummer Claude Coleman, Jr. and keyboardist Glenn McClelland, preceded the rarities with such staples as the opening “Did You See Me?,” as well as “She Wanted to Leave,” “With My Own Bare Hands,” “The Grobe,” “Waving My Dick in the Wind” and “Even If You Don’t.”
The latter half of the set presented more well-traveled favorites like “Voodoo Lady,” “The Stallion pt 3,” “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot,” “Bananas and Blow,” “The HIV Song,” “Take Me Away” and “Ocean Man.” Other less-common entries on Saturday’s setlist included “Common Bitch,” “Up On The Hill,” “Sweet Texas Fire” and the set-ending “Fluffy.” The three-song encore consisted of “Fiesta,” “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?” and “I’m Holding You.”
