Dead & Company canceled their Playing In The Sand 2022 destination events due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. The events were supposed to take place at Moon Palace Cancún in Riviera Cancun, Mexico January 7–10 and January 13-16.
“With much sadness and after great consideration of every possible scenario, the Playing in the Sand shows in Riviera Cancun on January 7-10 and January 13-16 have now been canceled by CID Presents due to the spiking COVID-19 cases,” wrote Dead & Company in an announcement on social feeds. “Dead & Company and CID Presents tried everything possible to bring normalcy and to deliver a great experience and amazing music, but with each day it became increasingly clear that canceling is the correct thing to do for the fans and for our crew.”
Previously, drummer Bill Kreutzmann pulled out of the events under doctor’s orders on Monday. Then guitarist John Mayer tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday. Word Mayer would miss the first weekend came with news Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Mickey Hart, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti would be joined by JRAD/Ghost Light/Billy & The Kids guitarist Tom Hamilton and Wolf Bros/RatDog drummer Jay Lane for performances at the event under the moniker Dos Hermanos con Amigos. Special guests including Margo Price were expected to make appearances with Dos Hermanos con Amigos.
The band and event organizers CID Presents offered refunds last week to attendees who didn’t feel comfortable heading to Mexico due to the Omicron surge. Now, Playing In The Sand attendees will receive an email “shortly with all details about refunds.”
