Eddie Vedder Mourns Loss On New ‘Earthling’ Single, “Brother The Cloud” [Listen]

108

Eddie Vedder mourns a heavy loss on “Brother the Cloud”, the latest single from his forthcoming album, Earthling, due out on February 11th via Republic Records.

“Brother the Cloud” combines Vedder’s traditional alt-rock instrumentation with decidedly somber lyrics. The guitarist/singer-songwriter/Pearl Jam frontman sings of the loss of his brother with lines like “I had a brother/But now my brother is gone/Oh I search the sky for a/Glimpse of his blue eyes/And there I find/His image in the clouds”. While the tune arrives with a more mellow, flanger-infused guitar at first, it eventually unleashes a more distorted, heavy sound to match the weight of his words.

“Brother the Cloud” follows two previously released Earthling singles, “Long Way” and “The Haves”. The acclaimed frontman recently detailed the full, 13-song tracklist—which will include some archival recordings of his late father—and an all-star cast of guest collaborators that will appear on the album. These guests will include Sir Elton JohnSir Ringo StarrStevie Wonder, and both Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“I carried that disc around for two, three months in my suitcase, not ready to hear it,” Vedder said of his father’s recordings in an interview with Mojo. “Finally, I got the guts, and after a couple bottles of wine played it one night in Argentina. And he was good. It was incredible – like he left a message for me.”

“I thought of [Earthling] like a setlist – by the end, that’s when you start bringing out special guests… We had Stevie and Elton, Ringo was an incredible addition… and then my pop gets to be on a record with those guys, which is not too shabby.”
