Dave Matthews celebrates his 55th birthday today. The renowned Dave Matthews Band frontman, singer-songwriter and guitarist was born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating from South Africa’s Damelin College high school in 1985, Dave returned to the U.S. — he became a naturalized citizen in 1980 — joining his mother in Charlottesville, Virginia, a place his family had lived before he was born. While Matthews didn’t attend the University of Virginia, the aspiring singer-songwriter bartended in the college town at a place called Miller’s where he would meet future members of Dave Matthews Band.
Formed in 1991, DMB would go on to become one of the most successful bands of the past 30 years both critically and commercially. Buoyed by Dave’s songwriting and the immense talent of the group, DMB nabbed the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “So Much To Say” in 1997 and Dave would clock another Grammy in 2004 for the song “Gravedigger” off his 2003 debut solo album, Some Devil.
In the commercial sphere, DMB was the highest-grossing touring act between 2000 and 2010. After releasing Away From The World in 2012, the group set a record with six consecutive studio albums by a band to debut at number one on the Billboard album chart. DMB put that record further out of reach after releasing their latest studio album in 2018, Come Tomorrow, which also premiered atop the chart.
Evidenced by his ever upward success, Dave has never been one to rest on his laurels. While Come Tomorrow was DMB’s last studio album, Dave unveiled four new originals in 2021 — along with a Stones classic — and revealed in an interview with SiriusXM’s Ari Fink last summer that a new studio LP was in the works. Walk Around The Moon | July 23, 2021
After the pandemic put DMB’s 2020 plans on hold, Dave wasted no time in getting to new material beginning with “Walk Around The Moon” at the band’s first concert in 510 days at Raleigh, North Carolina’s Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek on July 23. Matthews prefaced the tune by noting he had done “a little bit of writing” during the pandemic pause and that “Walk Around The Moon” was the first song the band played when they could safely get back together.

The Ocean And The Butterfly | July 23, 2021
A full-band debut of “The Ocean And The Butterfly” also arrived on July 23 in Raleigh. Dave had unveiled the tune solo during the Save Our Stages Fest on October 18, 2020, as per DMB Almanac. “The Ocean And The Butterfly” was perhaps a familiar song for fans as Dave played it solo several more times in late 2020 and early 2021.

The next song debut came on August 13 in Noblesville, Indiana at the Ruoff Music Center formerly known as Deer Creek. “I don’t think I’ve ever played this song before,” Dave rightly said before DMB launched into one of their more rocking songs in recent memory.

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction | August 24, 2021
The only cover on the list came in the form of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” While Dave Matthews has a history with The Stones including opening and collaborating with the legendary rockers in the past, DMB’s debut of “Satisfaction” came on August 24, the same day Stones drummer Charlie Watts died. DMB played the song four more times in 2021.

The final debut of 2021 arrived during DMB’s November 5 concert in Columbus, Ohio in the form of “Madman’s Eyes.” The song opened with an extended horn solo before Dave led the band through the new tune.
