John Mayer contributed a solo cover of The Golden Girls theme song “Thank You For Being A Friend” to CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast. The Dead & Company guitarist performed the tune in honor of The Golden Girls star Betty White who passed away at age 99 earlier in the day on Friday.
“Thank You For Being A Friend” was originally written and recorded by Andrew Gold for his 1978 studio album, All This And Heaven Too. Cynthia Fee covered the song for use as the theme for The Golden Girls, a sitcom which aired on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Betty White starred on the show with Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty.
Mayer went solo for his brief rendition of “Thank You For Being A Friend.” John’s longtime friend Andy Cohen co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live special from Times Square in New York City with Anderson Cooper. The guitarist now heads to Mexico for Dead & Company‘s Playing In The Sand destination events.
