Khruangbin and Leon Bridges unveiled the sultry new single “Chocolate Hills.” The love song is one of five tracks featured on their forthcoming collaborative EP, Texas Moon, which arrives on February 18 through Dead Oceans, in partnership with Columbia Records and Night Time Stories Ltd.
The Texas-based musicians first joined forces on Texas Sun, a four-track EP that came out in February of 2020. Texas Moon is “more introspective” than the first EP according to Leon Bridges with Khruangbin bassist Laura Lee adding the upcoming collection “feels more night time.” Texas Moon was previously previewed with lead single “B-Side.”
Both EPs come in tribute and take inspiration from the artists’ home state. “I think we’re redefining how people perceive Texas music—that beautiful marriage of country and R&B—and really paying homage to that,” explained Bridges. “They’re from Houston, so they’re aware of the whole chopped ‘n’ screwed thing, and I gravitated to that growing up as well. And when I picked up a guitar, I began to discover Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson and that side of it. The writing is a reflection of a lot of those things.”
“Texas music isn’t just one thing,” noted Khruangbin guitarist Mark Speer. “It’s a lot of things, and I’m actively trying to put all the influences we had growing up into the music because that’s what Texas sounds like to me.”
Leon Bridges and Khruangbin debuted “Chocolate Hills” live last month in Dallas when Bridges joined the trio at The Factory in Deep Ellum. Stream the studio version below:
