Khruangbin and Leon Bridges have shared “Chocolate Hills”, the latest taste of their forthcoming EP, Texas Moon. “Chocolate Hills” follows the previously released “B-Side” as the second single from the EP, due out on February 18th via Dead Oceans in partnership with Columbia Records and Night Time Stories Ltd.
Back on February 7th, 2020, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges released their first collaborative EP, Texas Sun. The four-track record heard members Mark Speer (guitar), Laura Lee (bass), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums) link up with Bridges for the first time, an experience that had a lasting impact on the band. Looking to recreate this magic, the collaborators recorded five tracks for Texas Moon, inspired by the group’s home state and paying homage to its unique marriage of country and R&B.

“It’s like a short story…,” said Lee in a press release alongside the initial announcement. “And it leaves room to continue having these stories together. It’s not Khruangbin, it’s not Leon, it’s this world we created together.”
Texas Moon, in contrast with Texas Sun, will offer an introspective stroll through the darkness. The artists will channel an intimate musical scope, highlighted by minimalism and infused with spirituality.
“Without joy, there can be no real perspective on sorrow,” Khruangbin explained in a statement. “Without sunlight, all this rain keeps things from growing. How can you have the sun without the moon?”
“Chocolate Hills” perfectly illustrates this mellow and more intimate vibe that Khruangbin and Bridges try to foster with Texas Moon. Spacey and sensual, the track is driven by Lee’s bass and Bridges’ vocals, which arrive in tandem as if they were made for one another. A washing confluence of Speer’s guitar licks and melodies from a Hammond organ and synthesizer add texture to the lyrically deep track about cherishing the time spent with a loved one.
