The entertainment world is still reeling from the death of TV legend Betty White, who passed away on December 31st at the age of 99. Lake Street Dive is no exception to the bereaved, as the New England indie-soul outfit shared a cover of The Golden Girls theme, “Thank You For Being A Friend”.

The cover comes from Lake Street Dive’s November 2020 Lounge Around Sounds Variety Hour livestream was recorded in keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss‘ childhood living room. Penned by Andrew Gold, the song first appeared on his 1978 album, All This And Heaven TooCynthia Fee went on to cover the song, which was used as the Golden Girls theme on NBC from 1985–1992.

Vocalist Rachael Price takes the first verse of the song before handing it off to Akie for the next. Though TV audiences heard only a small snippet of “Thank You For Being A Friend” at the start of each Golden Girls episode, the entire song still feels intimately familiar. In the absence of guitarist/trumpeter Mike “McDuck” Olson—who announced his departure from the band in spring 2021—bassist Bridget Kearney and drummer Mike Calabrese fill in the sonic gaps for a sparing-yet-layered tribute.

Below, watch Lake Street Dive cover “Thank You For Being A Friend”, shared in tribute to Betty White. Lake Street Dive joined a long list of bands including John MayerThe Disco Biscuits, and more in paying tribute to the late Betty White with performances of The Golden Girls theme.
