The String Cheese Incident wrapped up their International Incident at Jewel Paradise Cove, Runaway Bay, Jamaica on Saturday. SCI welcomed Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne during the first set of the finale.
Cheese got things underway with their third rendition of Pure Prairie League’s “Pickin’ To Beat The Devil” since debuting it in Austin last fall. Bill Payne then joined Kyle Hollingsworth in key world as Kyle, on organ, led the band through his Cheese classic “Lost.” Bill added some of his signature barrelhouse piano on the jam before Michael Kang took over on electric mandolin.
A funk jam then led into The Meters classic “Hey Pocky A-Way” which saw Payne shining on the piano once again. The tail end of the tune saw Kyle and Bill trading licks in a stellar dueling piano section with Hollingsworth and Payne playing on the same keyboard. The keyboardists then switched, with Bill manning the organ and Kyle on piano for the song’s conclusion.
“Holy shit, Bill Payne in the house,” Kyle said after “Pocky Way.” “One of my inspirations of all time.” The sextet then went it alone for “Look At Where We Are” and “MLT.” SCI closed out the first set with a pairing of “Piece Of Mine” and “Beautiful.”
Cheese kicked off the six-song second set with a seamless section beginning with “Looking Glass” and continuing through a cover of Bob Marley & The Wailers’s “Bend Down Low” and “Bumpin’ Reel.” Relatively new tune “The Big Reveal” then prefaced a set-closing section of two SCI classics “Jellyfish” and “Rollover.” Cheese put an exclamation point on their International Incident with a “Rosie” encore.
