1. Gov’t Mule Gets Saxy In Jamaica
Destination event season is in full swing and Gov’t Mule recently completed Island Exodus 12 at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. It wouldn’t be Island Exodus without guest appearances from saxophonist Ron Holloway and this year was no exception. All three Gov’t Mule concerts in Jamaica, which can each be heard on the nugs.net app, featured Holloway sit-ins. The longtime Mule collaborator and friend joined the group for such songs as “32-20 Blues,” “Doing It To Death,” and “Brown Sugar” on January 16. Ron added to “Soulshine,” “Dreams,” “The Other One Jam” and more on January 18 before helping to close out the event on January 19.
2. The String Cheese Incident Welcomes 2022 With New Material
The String Cheese Incident rang in 2022 with a three-night stand at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. It’s clear the band has been hard at work on new material, as SCI fit four new originals into the setlists. Bassist Keith Moseley led “Lend Me A Hand” and guitarist Bill Nershi fronted “World Gone Crazy” on December 30. Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve included the premiere of the Jason Hann-sung “Short Stack Willie” and keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth fronted “Trip The Light Fantastic” on January 1. 3. Widespread Panic Panic En La Playa Returns
Widespread Panic headed down to Mexico for Panic En La Playa Diez. The jam scene veterans went the old school route on January 22 before showing off some newer material on January 23. A tribute to the late Butch Trucks came via a rare “Mountain Jam” as part of the action on January 24, while the encore at the finale on January 25 featured guest keyboardist Adam MacDougall. 4. The Circle Of Life Continues Into 2022 For Goose
Goose also celebrated the start of 2022 in Chicago with a two-night New Year’s Run at the Riviera Theatre. The band dusted off the Disney classic “Circle Of Life” for the first time since 2017’s Goosemas 4 concert to lead into a countdown to 2022 on New Year’s Eve. A +40-minute “The Empress Of Organos” and “Creatures” pairing followed. Highlights from December 30 include well-jammed versions of “Time To Flee,” “Tumble” and “Earthling Or Alien?” With Goose Winter Tour 2022 just underway, stay tuned for concert recordings from the band’s first run of the year on nugs.net app.
5. Infamous Stringdusters Members Jam With Greensky Bluegrass
Greensky Bluegrass launched a tour with The Infamous Stringdusters in Albany, New York on January 20. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for the collaborations to begin. The Dusters’ banjoist Chris Pandolfi added to “Past My Prime” and “Don’t Lie” during GSBG’s second set in Philadelphia on January 21, while fiddler Jeremy Garrett helped Greensky close out their first set with “Fixin’ To Ruin” and “Burn Them” in Port Chester, New York on January 22. The bands continue the tour through February 26 with Greensky Bluegrass recordings generally available the next day for listening via the nugs.net app.
6. Lotus Shows Off New Lineup In The Midwest
Guitarist Tim Palmieri joined the Lotus lineup last September following the departure of Mike Rempel. The livetronica quintet recently headed to the Midwest to begin their 2022 touring activity. Palmieri and his mates played Milwaukee on January 13 before performing a two-night stand in Chicago on January 14 and January 15. Official recordings of all three shows can be heard through the nugs.net app to give music lovers a taste of the new Lotus lineup.
7. Umphrey’s McGee Celebrates 24th Anniversary
Umphrey’s McGee had a big surprise in store for fans in Syracuse on January 21, the 24th anniversary of their first concert. The band performed their 2002 studio album Local Band Does OK in its entirety for the bulk of the evening. UM went on to debut their new single “I Don’t Know What I Want” live and also performed “Partyin’ Peeps” and “Slacker” to cap the night. More surprises followed in Albany, New York on January 22, as the sextet dusted off “Salamander Strut” for the first time since 1999 and revived a cover of Ween’s “Even If You Don’t” after nearly seven years on the shelf.
8. Painting The Emerald City White Stripes
nugs.net app offerings go well beyond the jam scene with The White Stripes among the many varied acts with numerous recordings available on the service. Jack White and Meg White’s performance at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle on July 11, 2001, is the latest addition to the nugs.net catalog. Highlights include a debut cover of Arthur Lee’s “Five String Serenade,” a raucous “Screwdriver” and a “Let’s Shake Hands” opener White Stripes archivist Ben Blackwell considers a top five performance.
9. A History Lesson From The Disco Biscuits
The Disco Biscuits returned home for a two-night New Year’s Run at The Fillmore Philadelphia. As a lead-in to 2022, the band told the tale of their last 16 years by performing the narration-filled “History Of The Disco Biscuits Part 2” on New Year’s Eve. The guys picked up not far from where they left off “Part 1” on December 31, 2002 and followed with “Biscuits Are Coming Home” as they did that night nearly 20 years prior. An explosive “Rock Candy” sequence, rare cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations” and fun “We Like To Party” encore were among highlights on December 30.
10. Up-And-Comers Eggy Share Fall Highlights
Rising jam quartet Eggy have plenty of concert recordings available on the nugs.net app to give music fans a chance to hear their inventive sound. The band — consisting of Jake Brownstein, keyboardist Dani Battat, bassist Mike Goodman and drummer Alex Bailey — also put together a compilation featuring Fall Tour 2021 highlights that serves as a good place to start.
