Railroad Earth Welcomes Fruition’s Mimi Naja In Atlanta

106

Railroad Earth welcomed Fruition‘s Mimi Naja during their concert at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on Friday. Naja joined RRE toward the end of the second set and returned for the encore.

Railroad got the show underway with “Cold Water” followed by “Old Dangerfield.” After “Only By The Light” and “It’s So Good,” “Black Bear” kicked off a three-song seamless section including “The Forecast” and an exploratory “Grandfather Mountain,” the latter stretching to nearly 13 minutes. “Delta Queen Waltz” closed out the first set.

A pairing of “Black Elk Speaks” and “Spring-Heeled Jack” launched the second frame. “Storms” and “For Love” followed before RRE took “Addin’ My Voice” on a +10-minute excursion. Mimi Naja, who hails from the ATL area, then joined in for the Railroad Earth classic “Hard Livin’” from their 2008 album, Amen Corner.

Mimi played electric guitar and also took over for frontman Todd Sheaffer on lead vocals. Naja led the band through the number before trading licks with multi-instrumentalist Tim Carbone, who put the fiddle down and shouldered his electric ax for the tune. RRE would then go it alone on a two-song set-closing segment beginning with the band’s recently released All For The Song single “Runnin’ Wild” and concluding with an expansive “Head,” which clocked in at around 15 minutes. Naja rejoined the band on electric guitar for the encore, which featured a well-jammed “I Am A Mess.”
