A new Frank Zappa box set, The Mothers 1971, is out now via Zappa Records/UMe. The Mothers 1971 includes the band’s entire two-night, four-show run at Fillmore East in New York, NY in celebration of the original live album’s 50th anniversary.
Fillmore East – June 1971 saw a release back in August of the same year and curated 12 tracks from the legendary run of shows. This new 8xCD set compiles all 63 tracks from the four performances on June 5th–6th, 1971, newly mixed from scratch by longtime Zappa Trust associate Craig Parker Adams at Winslow Ct. Studios and mastered by John Polito at Audio Mechanics. Of note, The Mothers 1971 also includes the surprise encore set that saw John Lennon and Yoko Ono join the band to close out the final evening (an event that would cause a rift between Zappa and Lennon/Oko for years to come).
In addition to capturing the Fillmore East performances, this all-encompassing offering also contains the single “Teas Began to Fall” and its B-side “Junier Mintz Boogie”, as well as audio from the band’s tour stops at State Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, PA on June 3rd; Watres Armory in Scranton, PA on June 1st; and the infamous show at Rainbow Theatre in London, England on December 10th.
It was this concert at Rainbow Theatre that saw a member of the audience jump onstage and attack Zappa following a take on The Beatles‘ “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. After falling into the orchestra pit below, Zappa found himself hospitalized and temporarily paralyzed in one arm, causing injuries that took months to heal. This event marked the final gig with Howard Kaylan (lead vocals/dialog) and Mark Volman (lead vocals/dialog), aka Flo & Eddie of The Turtles.
The Mothers 1971 is available now, packed with a comprehensive 68-page booklet showcasing a quite revealing, in-depth interview with key Mothers 1971 bandmember Ian Underwood as conducted by Ahmet Zappa, in addition to separate recollections and learned musings from Eddie Kramer and then-bassist Jim Pons alongside detailed, tape-by-tape liner notes from Joe Travers, and historical photos from Henry Diltz.
