The String Cheese Incident Welcomes Travelin’ McCourys In Jamaica

51

The String Cheese Incident continued their first of two 2022 International Incidents in Jamaica on Sunday with help from members of The Travelin’ McCourys. After opening for SCI with sets on Saturday and Sunday, The Travelin’ McCourys’ Ronnie McCoury, Rob McCoury, Alan Bartram and Jason Carter joined Cheese for six songs to end the Colorado-based jam quintet’s first set at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay.

SCI began Sunday’s first set with an unfinished “Texas” they would wind up concluding to end their second set last night. “Texas” led into “Can’t Wait Another Day” before Cheese served up “Short Stack Willie,” a new original debuted during the band’s recent New Year’s Run in Chicago. The members of The Travelin’ McCourys then emerged to join The String Cheese Incident for a number of rare covers starting with “Little Georgia Rose,” a Bill Monroe song debuted and played last by SCI on November 16, 2000 as per Phantasy Tour.

Next came Cheese’s first version of Django Reinhardt’s “Minor Swing” since July 13, 2013 before the band and their guests performed the traditional “Deep Elem Blues.” SCI last played the tune on November 1, 2015. The Travelin’ McCourys members also added to covers of The Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen A Face” (last played March 15, 2017) and Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” (last played July 14, 2013). The latter was given a reggae workover and was followed by a set-closing “Colorado Bluebird Sky.”

The String Cheese Incident mainly went with more familiar material for the rest of the night and on Monday. Jason Hann‘s “Manga” led off Sunday’s second set. Cheese then worked “Desert Dawn” into the Talking Heads classic “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody),” which gave way to the first “Stay Through” since October 28, 2018. A seamless run of “Sand Dollar,” “Sirens” and “Restless Wind” ended the frame. SCI treated fans to Peter Gabriel’s “Shaking The Tree” for their encore on Sunday.

Fittingly, “So Far From Home” opened last night’s first weekend finale. Cheese then paired “Eye Know Why” and the beloved “Sometimes A River.” Next, Bill Nershi‘s “Indian River” was dusted off after more than two years on the shelf. From there Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” became the evening’s initial cover and was followed by “Way Back Home” before The String Cheese Incident fit “The Remington Ride” within “Birdland.”

Recently debuted original “Trip The Light Fantastic” got the call to kick off Cheese’s last set of the weekend. The six-piece then jammed “Shantytown” into the traditional “Sitting On Top Of The World.” Next, “Way That It Goes” saw action for the first time since November 8, 2019 before SCI launched into staple “BollyMunster.” The band worked “It Is What It Is” into a “Drums” segment and then “Outside & Inside” bled into the conclusion of “Texas.” A cover of Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies” capped the weekend as last night’s encore.

The String Cheese Incident next takes the stage for their first of three concerts as part of Jamaican Incident: Weekend 2 on Thursday. Watch video shared on The Travelin’ McCourys’ Facebook page featuring the collaboration on Sunday below:
