Austin City Limits 7th Annual Hall of Fame Honors, a special episode of the long-running live music television show, airs on PBS tomorrow (Saturday, January 8) featuring new inductees Alejandro Escovedo, Lucinda Williams and Wilco as well as a bevy of guests paying tribute to the trio of legendary musicians. “This next gentlemen I met around 1977. I was in a band called The Nuns, he was in a band called X,” Alejandro told the audience at the 2021 ACL Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in Austin on October 28, 2021 before the performance. “It’s rare that a band really captures the times and captures the flavor of a city and in X you had a band that was very similar in that way that maybe The Doors had been or the Buffalo Springfield or the Byrds or someone like that. It’s a very special place to be and X really did capture the moment and I really think they were one of the best bands of that era. One of the main songwriters, of course, and a great great singer and a good friend, please welcome Mr. John Doe,” Escovedo added.
Alejandro Escovedo originally wrote and recorded “Sally Was A Cop” for his 2012 studio album, Big Station. John Doe handled lead vocals for the version at the 2021 ACL Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. Doe fronted an ensemble that featured Escovedo, Alejandro’s string section and backing singers, guitarist Lenny Kaye, percussionist Sheila E., ACL All-Stars House bandleader Lloyd Maines and guitarist David Grissom among others.
