While Wilco had Wednesday off from performing at their Sky Blue Sky destination event in Mexico, frontman Jeff Tweedy led his solo band through an afternoon set on the Heaven Beach stage. Famed vocalist Mavis Staples helped the group close out their 22-song performance with “Friendship,” one of the last songs her father, Pops Staples, recorded before his death.
Jeff Tweedy’s ensemble for the set at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya featured Liam Kazar, Sima Cunningham, Macie Stewart and James Elkington as well as his sons, Spencer Tweedy and Sammy Tweedy. Tweedy played nine of the 11 songs featured on his 2020 solo album Love Is The King. Additionally, seven of 11 tracks from 2018’s WARM made the setlist.
Sammy Tweedy sat out a number of tunes towards the beginning of the performance but had a turn in the spotlight by leading the group through a cover of Neil Young’s “Helpless” late in the set. Mavis, who joined Wilco for their encore on Tuesday, emerged for the “Friendship” finale. “Friendship” was featured on Pops Staples’ 2015 posthumous album Don’t Lose This. Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples completed the album collecting half-finished songs Pops recorded before his death in 2000. Mavis, Sammy and Sima shared vocal duties on “Friendship.”
Sky Blue Sky 2022 ends today with sets from Wilco, Tank & The Bangas, Kurt Vile & The Violators and more.
