Widespread Panic Dusts Off ‘Sometimes’ At Panic En La Playa 2022

Widespread Panic resumed the 2022 edition of their Panic En La Playa destination event on Sunday at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The band busted out a fIREHOSE cover during the show, as “Sometimes” saw action last night for the first time in nearly eight years.

While WSP went the old school route for the first night of Panic En La Playa Diez on Saturday, the sextet included a pair of their newest originals in Sunday’s setlist. Yet it was the classic “Space Wrangler” that opened last night. Guitarist Jimmy Herring let the fretboard fireworks fly throughout “Space Wrangler” which was followed by “One Arm Steve” and Talking Heads cover “Papa Legba.” The latter was propelled by drummer Duane Trucks and percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz before “Legba” bled into “Sleeping Man.” Next up was 2020 single “Sundown Betty.”

The first set rolled on with ‘Til The Medicine Takes gem “Nobody’s Loss” and WSP’s oft-played Neil Young cover “Walk On,” which gave way to “Up All Night.” Ortiz and Trucks then pounded out the beat that led into the band’s beloved version of “Travelin’ Light” by JJ Cale to close out the frame.

Last night’s second set began with Link Wray’s “Rumble” and the aforementioned “Sometimes.” The fIREHOSE cover was last played on April 4, 2014 — a span of 346 shows — as per PanicStream.com. A quick romp through “Action Man” followed before Panic took blues standard “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” deep with a jam that included a section akin to the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One.” John Bell then led his bandmates through the bombastic “Radio Child” and Herring shined on the instrumental “Machine.”

“Machine” was followed by a well-jammed “Barstools and Dreamers” that featured impressive interplay between Bell, Herring and keyboardist JoJo Hermann. Panic then laid into the sultry “Second Skin” from 2006’s Earth To America, a song co-written with old pal Jerry Joseph. “Second Skin” dissolved into Vic Chesnutt’s “Aunt Avis.” The sextet also honored Chesnutt by ending the set with the late singer-songwriter’s “Protein Drink”/”Sewing Machine” suite. Widespread Panic played their newest original, “Halloween Face,” to kick off an encore that also included “Bust It Big” with its “down in Mexico” lyric. The band returns to the stage tonight for their third of four Panic En La Playa 2022 performances.
