Yola served as musical guest on Tuesday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where she performed “Dancing Away in Tears”. The song comes off the English singer-songwriter’s Grammy-nominated 2021 album, Stand For Myself. She also sat for an interview on CBS This Morning for the shows ongoing “Road To The Grammys” segment.
From the song’s sleek opening, it presents an emerging artistic side of the singer born Yolanda Quartey. The backroom decadence that envelopes the track is a far cry from some of the more traditional modern country found on her 2019 debut, Walk Through Fire. Just as the title indicates, Yola firmly stands for herself on her new album, vocalizing her unwillingness to be an industry token the best way she knows how—and judging by the new album’s Grammy nomination for Best American Album and her recent tour opening for Chris Stapleton, the Americana industry is possibly even more receptive to this artistic honesty than the original Yola image they fell in love with in 2019.

“I’m a massive softie. I’m sentimental as heck,” she told the Recording Academy upon the album’s release. “I want to be treated with a sense of nuance and tenderness. I don’t have to be tough because I’m a Black woman. I don’t have to be servile because I’m from some other community. I don’t have to be ‘Put up or shut up’ because I’m seen as a moral authority.”
