Happy 80th Birthday Graham Nash: Performing With CSNY At Farm Aid 2000

Today marks Graham Nash’s 80th birthday. Born on February 2, 1942 in Blackpool, England, Nash gained prominence with the UK band The Hollies in the 1960s, lending his soaring, crystalline tenor and songwriting talent to the band up until his departure in 1968. Nash then moved to Los Angeles where he linked up with Stephen Stills and David Crosby to form the golden-voiced supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, who released their debut album of the same name in 1969. The group became even more super with the addition of Neil Young, who joined ahead of the the landmark 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Déjà Vu.

While CSNY’s tenure has been sporadic throughout the decades, the legendary singer-songwriters have almost always remained united when it comes to their stance on socio-political issues like opposing war and protecting the environment. Some of their most well-known works together have been protest songs like Young’s “Ohio,” Crosby’s “Long Time Gone” and Nash’s “Chicago,” the latter a Graham solo song appearing on CSNY’s iconic 1971 live double LP 4 Way Street.

The four troubadours continue their activism to this day, with Crosby, Stills and Nash standing in solidarity with their bandmate Neil Young who recently removed his music from Spotify in protest of COVID-19 misinformation on a podcast hosted by Joe Rogan. CSN followed their longtime friend and collaborator Joni Mitchell, who also removed her music from Spotify last week in support of Young.

A press release from Crosby, Stills and Nash stated “David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Stephen Stills have requested that their labels remove their collective recordings from Spotify,” and that “Nash has already begun the process to take down his solo recordings.” Crosby and Stills will also remove their solo material. Additionally, all CSN, CSNY and CN recordings will be pulled from the streaming platform.

We support Neil and we agree with him that there is dangerous disinformation being aired on Spotify’s Joe Rogan podcast. While we always value alternate points of view, knowingly spreading disinformation during this global pandemic has deadly consequences. Until real action is taken to show that a concern for humanity must be balanced with commerce, we don’t want our music – or the music we made together – to be on the same platform.

Another activist project of Young’s brought CSNY together over 21 years ago when the band performed at Farm Aid, of which Young is a founder, in Bristow, Virginia on September 17, 2000. To celebrate Graham Nash’s 80th birthday, JamBase complied a video list of nearly the entire CSNY Farm Aid 2000 appearance save for “Helplessly Hoping.”

CSNY took the Nissan Pavilion stage to rapturous applause and kicked off the performance with Stephen Stills’ solo cut “Love The One You’re With.” Next, Graham led the group through his “Marrakesh Express” off Crosby, Stills & Nash. CSNY then turned to material from Déjà Vu beginning with Neil’s “Helpless” ahead of Nash’s “Our House” and Crosby’s counterculture anthem “Almost Cut My Hair.” Young’s Crazy Horse classic “Cinnamon Girl” closed out the performance.
