It’s “Carnival Time” down in New Orleans in the new single from Irma Thomas, George Porter Jr., Cyril Neville, and The New Breed Brass Band. The track dotted with Crescent City stars is set to appear on the forthcoming soundtrack for Take Me To The River: New Orleans. Out on April 1st via Petaluma Records, the soundtrack traces the musical lineage of NOLA alongside director Martin Shore‘s documentary.
With additional help from Ivan Neville and Ian Neville, “Carnival Time” is as fully loaded as a Mardi Gras float. The musical party going on in the studio echoes that of festive paradegoers in the music video, as the lyrical lead tosses around from Thomas to Cyril to Porter. Meanwhile, The New Breed Brass Band keeps the second line steady as this musical parade marches down Bourbon Street.
“Carnival Time was the perfect combination of New Orleans’ musical royalty, with a contagious performance by The New Breed Brass Band,” Shore said in a statement. “The song is a whole party in itself.”
Take Me To The River: New Orleans serves as a follow-up to Shore’s original 2014 documentary on Memphis, Take Me To The River. The film’s soundtrack will host new material from Snoop Dogg, Jon Batiste, PJ Morton, G-Eazy, Big Freedia, Galactic, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Dumpstaphunk, William Bell, Ani DiFranco, Donald Harrison, and Ledisi. The 36-track collection will also feature new recordings from one of The Neville Brothers’ final performances and one of Dr. John’s last studio sessions.
