Marco Benevento returned to the familiar stomping grounds of Ardmore Music Hall on Friday. The headlining show outside Philadelphia, PA saw a full telling of Benevento’s “The Story of Fred Short” movement from the Joe Russo’s Almost Dead keyboardist’s 2016 album of the same name.

Benevento, who grew up 100 miles from Philly in Livingston, NJ, took the stage calling it “home sweet home.” The keyboardist reminded audiences that this was An Evening With Marco Benevento, “that means you never know, really, what might be happening.” The keyboardist spelled things out for the crowd to start the show, opening with “At the End or the Beginning“, one of his two singles released this year.

The show carried on with the Story of Fred Short cut “Dropkick”, which developed into a lengthy jam. Benevento then paid tribute to Leon Russell with a cover of “Out in the Woods” before “I Can’t See The Light” wrapped a brief first set.

Returning for set two, Benevento and bassist Karina Rykman alongside drummer Dave “D.B.” Butler loaded up for a lengthy second frame. The 13-song set consisted largely of “The Story of Fred Short” movement. This began with the eponymous opening of the seven-song cycle, followed by “Seven Twenty Two”, “Walking with Tyrone”, “Live a Certain Life”, “Stay in Line”, and finally “Follow the Arrow”. The sixth song of the story, “I Can’t See the Light”, was already played in the first set.

After closing set two with his pairing of Pink Floyd‘s “Fearless” and Elton John‘s “Bennie and the Jets”, Benevento encored with “Limbs of a Pine”, his collaboration with Kalmia Traver from 2012’s TigerFace. Marco then closed out the encore with his newest song, “Winter Rose“, only to take the stage once again for a second encore of “At the Show”.

Watch Marco Benevento open his Ardmore show with “At the End or the Beginning” followed by a jammed-out “Dropkick”. Scroll down for a detailed setlist. Benevento’s next solo date is on April 7th at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. For tickets and a full list of tour dates click here.
