The Austin, TX-based indie-rock group Spoon appeared on Tuesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and performed “The Hardest Cut” from its 2022 Lucifer on the Sofa album. Spoon also staged a three-song mini-set as part of the show’s exclusive off-air performance.
The Britt Daniel-fronted outfit comprised of members Jim Eno, Alex Fischel, Gerardo Larios, and Ben Trokan hosted the show at Los Angeles, CA’s El Capitan Theater just days after the February 11th release of Lucifer on the Sofa. “The Hardest Cut” arrived true to form, imbued with a droning electric guitar riff that glided over a headstrong bassline. This track served as an encapsulation of the album as a whole, highlighting the band’s ability to push its sound forward while maintaining its hallmark lyricism and artistically minimalistic instrumentation.

As the event turned to the off-air portion, Spoon delivered takes on older songs as well. After starting with “Wild”, another Lucifer on the Sofa cut, it worked through a rollicking rendition of “Small Stakes”, off 2002’s Kill the Moonlight. The group finally finished with one of its biggest hits, a serene telling of “Inside Out”, which initially appeared on its 2014 record, They Want My Soul.

The band will mount an extensive 2022 tour in support of Lucifer on the Sofa beginning on April 6th in Boston, MA.
