Tedeschi Trucks Band Dusts Off Rolling Stones Cover In Washington DC

138

Tedeschi Trucks Band wrapped up the first of two three-night runs at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. on Saturday. TTB busted out The Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia” to kick off the second set.

Guitarist Derek Trucks and vocalist/guitarist Susan Tedeschi launched the first set with a pair of originals, “I Want More” and “Do I Look Worried” off 2016’s Let Me Get By and 2013’s Made Up Mind respectively. A cover of Junior Wells’ “Little By Little” followed ahead of vocalist Mike Mattison leading the band through his “Life Is Crazy.”

TTB returned to cover material with Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham’s “Sweet Inspiration,” which The Derek Trucks Band included on their Grammy-winning 2009 album, Already Free. Originals “It’s So Heavy” and “Part Of Me” followed ahead of Blind Joe Reynold’s “Outside Woman.” TTB closed out the first frame with an extensive “Idle Wind” which clocked in at 15 minutes.

Tedeschi Trucks Band got the second set underway with The Stones “Sweet Virginia.” TTB last played the Exile On Main St. classic three years ago on February 2, 2019 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with The Wood Brothers which itself was a bust out after the song saw heavy rotation in 2017, the year it was debuted, but no plays in 2018, as per SetlistFM.

TTB continued with “Anyhow” ahead of a trio of covers, Derek And The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing,” Dr. John’s “I Walk On Gilded Splinters” and Mongo Santamaría’s “Afro Blue” which led into original “Shame” ahead of the classic “Midnight In Harlem.” TTB then embarked on an all-covers section to close the second set with pairings of Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery” as well as John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and Neil Young’s CSNY tune “Helpless.” TTB closed out the set with Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “That Did It.” The band would return to encore with an expansive “Bound For Glory” to bring their first Warner run to a close.
