Dave Matthews Band announced 2022 Summer Tour dates earlier this week. In honor of the famously hard-touring band’s return to the road this year, JamBase takes a look at recently surfaced pro-shot video of DMB’s two-night closer on July 21, 2004 at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey as this week’s Full Show Friday.
While the venue sitting just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia has undergone a number of name changes and is now called the Waterfront Music Pavillion (which was its original name), from 2001 to 2015 the arena was known as the Tweeter Center. Dave Matthews Band — at the time consisting of guitarist Dave Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, fiddler Boyd Tinsely and keyboardist Butch Taylor — kicked off the first of two shows at Tweeter on July 20, about a month into their 2004 Summer Tour.
The following night saw Dave and Stefan teasing a piece DMB Almanac calls “Scream Into The Grave” but also notes was titled “Fonzies New Idea” on the stage setlist. According to the Almanac, this never appeared again. The show got going in earnest with “Fool To Think” off DMB’s 2001 album, Everyday — marking the first time the song was played as an opener — followed by a song off Busted Stuff, released in 2002 and DMB’s latest album at the time, “Grey Street.” The classic, and now rare, “Drive In Drive Out” came next ahead of the tour debut of another vintage number, “Seek Up.” The group brought the song into 2004 in grand fashion, stretching it out to over 21 minutes.
Two songs, “Joyride” and “Crazy Easy,” which saw a lot of action in 2004 but have since become rarities, followed ahead of the Before These Crowded Street cuts “Crush” and “The Stone.” DMB then returned to Busted Stuff with “Where Are You Going.” The band took “Sugar Will” for nearly a dozen minutes before heading into “Hello Again.” Next up, a 16-minute “Jimi Thing” saw Dave working in lyrics to Buffalo Springfield’s “For What’s It’s Worth” ahead of the now rare “Help Myself” and another classic, “Don’t Drink The Water,” followed by yet another oft-played song of the early aughts, “If I Had It All.” Classic “What Would You Say” closed out the main set, the song had not appeared as a closer since May 12, 2002, as per DMB Almanac. Another rarity, “Good Good Time” kicked off the encore followed by the staple “Tripping Billies” to bring the evening to a close.
