93

Actor Charlie Day discussed his experience at Phish‘s Clifford Ball festival in 1996 on the latest episode of The Always Sunny Podcast. Day co-hosts the podcast with his It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-stars Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney.

This week’s The Always Sunny Podcast focuses on “The Gang Gets Invincible,” an episode of the long-running sitcom that aired on September 13, 2007. Day, who plays Charlie Kelly in the long-running sitcom, recalled taking mushrooms at Clifford Ball as part of a discussion about psychedelics since Frank (portrayed by Danny Devito) and Charlie ingest LSD in the It’s Always Sunny episode.

Charlie Day attended the Clifford Ball which was held at the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base in Plattsburgh, New York on August 16 and 17, 1996. “I was there, my and my pals, we were so low-rent,” Day remembered. “We went with this other group of kids and they were like kinda rich kids. They had a Volvo and nice tents. We had a tarp. We were like, ‘Hey, we’re going to try to make a little tent out of this tarp, can we use your frying pan?’” the actor recalled. Charlie and his friends “totally fucked this kid’s frying pan up” as they attempted to hammer in stakes.

Here’s the tale of Charlie Day’s mushroom experience at the Clifford Ball:

“Then, we got our hands on an extraordinary amount of very powerful mushrooms and ate way too many of them. I remember passing out within the first 10 minutes, throwing up and then when I came to I was already tripping a thousand times harder than [my friends] already had and this was within the first 30 minutes. I was thinking, ‘Okay, this is gonna be quite a ride.’ I remember just trying to hang on to my sanity, for my dear life.

“At one point we’re in the concert, we’re just kinda sitting on the lawn. All of a sudden everybody turns around and they’re looking right at us. ‘Why is this happening? What the fuck is happening?’ Only to realize there’s a marching band moving right behind us! I remember another one of my buddies said, ‘Man, the cutest girl came up to you and asked you for a cigarette and all you said was I’m all about it, I’m all about it.’ Mostly it was good. I think I’d do it again once I get through the parenting phase of my life.”
