Cloudchord Guests With Pigeons Playing Ping Pong In Austin

52

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong stopped by Emo’s in Austin, Texas on Saturday. The quartet welcomed Austin-based producer and guitarist Cloudchord (Derek VanScoten) to help close out the second set.

PPPP got the show underway with an 11-minute version of the relatively new tune “Skinner” ahead of a pairing of staples “Somethin’ For Ya” and “Distant Times.” A cover of the George Harrison-penned Beatles classic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” then led into the original “Fox And Toad.” Next, a standalone “Water” proceeded a three-song seamless set-closing section which began with newer songs “Move Like That” and “Weightless.” PPPP capped off the first frame with classic “King Kong.”

The second set began with another newcomer, “Day In Time.” Staple “Poseidon” then encompassed a nearly 13-minute excursion on Daft Punk’s “One More Time.” More new material in “My Own Way” followed ahead of a pairing of “Kiwi” and set-closer “Sunny Day.”

PPPP would welcome Cloudchord, aka Derek VanScoten, on guitar for a three-pronged axe attack alongside the quartet’s Greg Ormont and Jeremy Schon. The exploratory Psychology cut waxed from rock to more vibey sequences over the course of 20-minutes with a big finish and Ormont thanking Cloudchord to close the set. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong would return to encore with a 13-minute “Ocean Flows.”
