Happy Birthday Angus Young: Performing Live With AC/DC At Circus Krone In 2003

Today is AC/DC guitarist Angus Young’s 67th birthday. The iconic axe man was born on March 31, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland but moved with his family to Sydney, Australia where he co-founded legendary rock band AC/DC with his brother Malcolm and others in 1973.

Bolstered by Angus’ killer guitar riffage and famed schoolboy stage outfit along with lead vocals from Bon Scott — who joined the band in 1974 — AC/DC garnered themselves a record contract with independent Australian label Albert on which they released their debut album, High Voltage, in 1975. Their 1976 LP Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap furthered their image as Australia’s bad boy rockers.

AC/DC were prolific in their early output, releasing eight albums in five years. The band, however, found international stardom with two LPs, 1979’s Highway To Hell and 1980’s Back In Black. But along with astronomical accomplishments came tragedy, Bon Scott died on February 19, 1980 due to complications from alcohol just as the band began making Back In Black. While the future of the group was uncertain without their lead singer, vocalist Brian Johnson would step in and help the group finish Back In Black, one of the best selling records of all time second only to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

AC/DC continued to record and tour throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. In 2003, AC/DC was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, toured with The Rolling Stones and delivered their own headlining concerts which included a stop at the Circus Krone in Munich, Germany. The June 17, 2003 show was captured for posterity in the concert film, AC/DC: Live At The Circus Krone released that same year.

The band — guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young, Johnson, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Wiliams — opened up the show with “Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be” off 1977’s Let There Be Rock. The first of two solos from Angus came during the album’s “Bad Boy Boogie.” The group also delivered newer material in the form of “Stiff Upper Lip,” the title track to their 2000 LP along with four classic rock anthems off Back In Black including “Hells Bells,” “Shoot To Thrill,” “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” and the title track.

Additionally, AC/DC offered iconic hits like “T.N.T,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Thunderstruck” as well as set closer “Let There Be Rock” which featured another shred excursion from Angus. The group delivered a double encore featuring “Highway To Hell” and “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)” before bookending the concert with a Let There Be Rock track, “Whole Lotta Rosie,” for the second encore.
