John Mayer Dusts Off ‘Walt Grace’s Submarine Test’ At The Forum

96

John Mayer kicked off a two-night run at The Forum in Los Angeles on Sunday as part of his Sob Rock Tour. The singer-songwriter and guitarist performed “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” for the first time in over two years during the acoustic portion of the concert.

Mayer got things underway at The Forum with the opener, “Last Train Home,” from his 2021 album Sob Rock. The first full-band segment also included Sob Rock singles “Wild Blue” and “I Guess I Just Feel Like.” Additionally, the singer-songwriter peppered in songs from previous albums like “Belief” and “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)” off 2006’s Continuum as well as “Who Says” from the 2009 LP Battle Studies.

After a full-band “I Guess I Just Feel Like,” Mayer delivered the acoustic segment of the concert beginning with the bust out of “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967,” last time played on October 9, 2019 in Amsterdam, as per SetlistFM. The singer-songwriter offered the Born and Raised (2012) track solo acoustic on a 12-string resonator guitar. The acoustic section also included “Neon” from John’s 2001 debut album Room For Squares as well as a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin.”

Mayer continued the concert in the full band format with Sob Rock’s “Shot In The Dark” before taking it back to Room For Squares once again with “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” The sole cut, “Still Feel Like Your Man,’ from Mayer’s 2017 LP The Search For Everything followed ahead of Battle Studies’ “Edge Of Desire.”

Following Sob Rock’s “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does,” John Mayer and company offered a portion of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” featuring guitarist David Ryan Harris and also threw in elements of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” in “Til The Right One Comes.” John closed out the set with “Gravity” from the 2005 John Mayer trio album Try! Mayer returned for a two-song encore of the classic “Waiting On The World To Change” and Sob Rock’s “New Light.”
