Keith Richards Talks Rolling Stones, X-Pensive Winos & More On ‘Sunday Morning’

59

Guitarist Keith Richards was profiled for a feature that aired on CBS’ Sunday Morning this past weekend. Richards discussed a variety of topics, including the X-Pensive Winos reunion, recording new songs with The Rolling Stones and the shock of Charlie Watts’ death.

The profile hosted by Anthony Mason started with footage featuring Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos rehearsing for their three-song performance at Love Rocks NYC this past Thursday night at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Richards is joined in the band by guitarist Waddy Watchel, drummer Steve Jordan and keyboardist Ivan Neville. Love Rocks NYC musical director Will Lee played bass with the group on Thursday.

One of the first revelations in the piece is that Richards quit smoking cigarettes. “It’s funny, I don’t think about it much anymore,” Keef noted to Mason about a 55-year habit he stopped two years ago. Richards said he had “10 times more wind” when The Rolling Stones started rehearsing for their 2021 tour last August.

The next subject that came up with the loss of Charlie Watts. “He had had a round with cancer a year or two before. He beat that one but just got hit with a double whammy,” Keith said in confirming the longtime Rolling Stones drummer did die from cancer. Richards explained Watts wanted the group to continue touring, so The Rolling Stones enlisted Steve Jordan to fill Charlie’s seat.

Talked returned to The X-Pensive Winos and a reissue of his Main Offender studio album that arrives this Friday. Mason showed Richards notes he wrote on an envelope and had Keith interpret his scrawl. The 78-year-old musician went on to mention he’s been working with The Rolling Stones on “eight or nine new pieces of material.” Richards gave no indication of when fans can hear the songs but The Stones will return to the road for a European tour this summer.

Keith Richards also addressed the recent trend of legacy artists selling their catalogs. “Mick [Jagger] and I have not spoken about it on a serious level,” the guitarist said. “I don’t know if we’re ready to sell our catalog. We might drag it out a bit.”
