Lucius unveiled “Dance Around It,” a new single featuring backing vocals from special guests Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. The track is the latest preview of Second Nature, a studio album set for release on April 8 through Mom + Pop Music.
Bandleaders Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe wrote the 10 songs featured on Second Nature, which marks the first Lucius album since 2016’s Good Grief. Recorded mainly at Nashville’s famed RCA Studio A, Second Nature was co-produced by Carlile and Dave Cobb. Laessig and Wolfe are accompanied on the LP by longtime band members Peter Lalish and Dan Molad as well as Solomon Dorsey. Lucius previously shared Second Nature singles “Next To Normal,” “White Lies” and “Heartbursts.”
Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe shared the following about “Dance Around It”:
“In many ways ‘Dance Around It’ cracked the intention for the entire record; to dance through the darkness. To take what may have been isolating and internal, and instead, make it loud, and put it on display – give it legs to dance. When we brought it to the studio, we asked our dear friends and collaborators (pinch me) Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile to sing with us; they were so present and instrumental during the writing and recording of our record – and hearing them sing on this track felt like dancing through that last part of a dark tunnel.”
Laessig and Wolfe asked friends and fans to contribute to the “Dance Around It” video. “They recorded and performed pieces of the song we had sent them (all in various tempos; unaware of any part of the song except the verse or chorus they were individually sent – either super sped up, or majorly slowed down),” the pair wrote. “They had to trust in us fully, which made things more exciting, because we had no idea what we would be given to work with; and no contributor had (or has yet) heard the song in its entirety or its original speed until right now.”
