A lot has changed since Khruangbin last visited Radio City Music Hall in 2018 opening for Leon Bridges. Most notably, the band’s position on the marquee as the Houston, TX trio headlined New York’s famed theater on Wednesday for the first of two sold-out nights.

Following an opening set from Nubya Garcia, guitarist Mark Speer, bassist Laura Lee, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson took the stage to deliver cuts from across their ever-expanding discography. More recent selections from 2020’s Mordechai including “First Class” and “So We Won’t Forget” were interspersed with classics like “August 10th” and even the band’s rendition of Kool & The Gang‘s “Summer Madness” which first brought them to the attention of producer/DJ Bonobo nearly a decade ago.

Rather than doling out covers throughout the set, Khruangbin is known for its medley of hip-hop covers. Wednesday’s edition of the band’s signature cocktail began with David Bowie‘ “Let’s Dance” and ended with Chris Isaak‘s “Wicked Game”, with tributes to MF DOOMIce CubeSnoop Dogg, and even Elton John thrown in the middle, per Brooklyn Vegan.
