Pigeons Playing Ping Pong returned to the Bay Area on Saturday for a concert at The UC Theatre in Berkeley, California. The Baltimore-based quartet was joined by ALO guitarist Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) towards the end of the evening’s first set for two tunes that were broken up by an original debut.
PPPP got their final stop of the winter in California underway with “In The Bubble,” an original debuted in August of 2020. Saturday’s “In The Bubble” featured a solo from drummer Alex “Gator” Petropulous. The four-piece then paired fan favorites “Melting Lights” and “Offshoot” before serving up just their fifth take on recently premiered original “Hit The Ground Ruunin’,” which bled into oldie “Pop Off.”

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Share ‘Move Like That’ Single Featuring Jason Hann
Lebo emerged after “Pop Off” for live staple jam vehicle “Posideon.” PPPP frontman Greg Ormont addressed the crowd as Lebo took the stage. “We’ve missed playing music for you these past couple of years like you’d never believe,” Ormont said. “We also missed seeing our friends across the coast … eating food in random places … it’s great to be back.” The ensemble then launched into a nicely extended “Posideon” featuring a stellar guitar solo from Lebo and blissful call-and-response between Dan and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong lead guitarist Jeremy Schon. The five musicians eventually connected on a funky groove they worked over to conclude “Posideon.”
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong went sans Lebo to premiere new original “The Road.” Then, the veteran Bay Area musician came back to join the four-piece for a set-closing cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody),” PPPP’s first since June 11, 2020.
Saturday’s second set began with “Indiglo,” a song featured on PPPP’s upcoming Perspective album. “Indiglo” gave way to “Schwanthem” before Pigeons kept the classic material flowing with “Fun In Funk.” Another oldie, “Burning Up My Time,” then led into the year-old original “Skinner.”
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought the second set in Berkeley to a close with a “Couldn’t We All” segment that encapsulated covers of *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” in a reprise of a sequence first pulled off at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City over Super Bowl Weekend 2021 and played three additional times later last year. The Baltimore-based band said farewell to the Bay Area Flock with a “Feelin’ Fine” encore.
