Railroad Earth Welcomes Jay Starling In Charlottesville

84

Railroad Earth wrapped up their March run with a two-night stand at the Jefferson Theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday. The March 26 concert saw the band welcoming multi-instrumentalist Jay Starling ( dobro, lap steel) for the entire show.

RRE’s March run — which consisted of rescheduled dates — also featured multi-instrumentalist Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose (banjo, lap steel, guitar) filling in for touring member Mike Robinson as he had a previous commitment with Sarah Jarosz. Further lineup changes included touring member Matt Slocum being unable to play the Charlottesville run due to a family emergency.

Railroad got the show underway with a paring of “Cold Water” and “Luxury Liner.” RRE continued with “Give That Boy a Hand, “Slippin’ Away,” “For Love” and “Any Road.” Frontman Todd Sheaffer then led the band through the classic “Like A Buddha” with RRE’s Tim Carbone on fiddle, John Skehan on mandolin, bassist Andrew Altman and drummer Carey Harmon along with Zickefoose on acoustic guitar and Jay Starling, who is the son of renowned bluegrass musician John Starling of Seldom Scene, on lap steel guitar. “Buddha” headed into “Cuckoo’s Medley” to close out the first frame.

The second set kicked off with the band’s recent single “Runnin’ Wild” set to land on their upcoming album, All For The Song, due out in April. A coupling of “Walk Beside Me” and
“Captain Nowhere” followed ahead of “Storms” and “Right in Tune.” RRE then emarked on a three-song segment beginning with “1759” before heading through “Fisherman’s Blues” and 12 Wolves.” Railroad Earth closed out the second set with the favorite “Hard Livin’” before returning to encore with the tune that follows “Hard Livin’” on the 2008 album Amen Corner, “Bringin’ My Baby Back Home.”
