The Avett Brothers delivered a concert at the KFC Yum Center in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday. The Avetts debuted a cover of “The Way I’ve Always Been” from Kentucky native singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall towards the middle of Saturday’s show.

The Avett Brothers started off the show in Louisville with “The Fall” from their 2006 record Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions. Next up The Avetts played “Satan Pulls The Strings” off 2016’s True Sadness before taking it back to their 2007 LP Emotionalism with “Paranoia In B-Flat Minor.” In the fourth slot came “Morning Song” off 2013’s Magpie and the Dandelion followed by “Laundry Room,” appearing on the band’s landmark 2009 album I And Love And You, ahead of the traditional “Old Joe Clark.”

After “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” The Avett Brothers offered their debut of Tom T. Hall’s “The Way I’ve Always Been.” Scott Avett spoke a bit about how seeing Tom T. Hall was one of his and brother Seth Avett’s earliest musical memories and then later getting to meet the renowned singer-songwriter known as “The Storyteller” who penned a number of country classics including “Harper Valley PTA.” Hall sadly died in August 2021. Seth recalled seeing Hall as well and watching him play “Mr. Bojangles” wearing a coat and tails with pins on it and a top hat. “We’re gonna get Scott a coat like that at some point,” Seth said before the Avetts unveiled “The Way I’ve Always Been” in their trio format with bassist Bob Crawford.

Following “Murder In The City” from 2008 EP The Second Gleam and “I Wish I Was” off True Sadness, a good portion of the second half of the set was dedicated to tunes from the band’s 2019 LP, Closer Than Together, including “Locked Up,” “High Steppin,” and “Bleeding White,” the latter prefacing the band’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” The Avetts closed out the main set with the True Sadness favorite “Ain’t No Man” ahead of a three-song encore which included the title track to I And Love And You, “Talk On Indolence” and “No Hard Feelings” to cap off the Louisville play.
