[UPDATE: 5/19/22]: Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio recruited American Idol winner Taylor Hicks for a new song featured in the final episode of Osiris Media‘s Sugar Maple podcast. Entitled “Revolover”, the song features Hicks on vocals and was written by Trey and Phish lyricist Tom Marshall, who is the podcast’s co-creator and executive producer in addition to being the co-founder of Osiris Media. He was one of three writers responsible for Sugar Maple‘s fiction storyline.

Sugar Maple tells the story of a Fender Telecaster guitar that is enchanted with mysterious powers. Each episode focuses on a different character who finds the guitar, writes a song on it, becomes obsessed with it, and finds their life changed, for better or worse. The eight players featured in the storyline include a humble bluesman, a rising country artist, a proud disco legend, a gospel newcomer, a troubled metal queen, and more.

Hicks was recruited by singer-songwriter Maggie Rose to play the singing voice of the main character, podcast narrator Terrance Woodridge, who interviews the guitar’s various owners throughout the podcast, trying to uncover its secrets. His regular speaking voice is played by Fred Savage.

All episodes of Sugar Maple are available now. Listen to Trey Anastasio and Taylor Hicks join forces on the song “Revolover” via the player below.

[3/21/22]: American Idol winner Taylor Hicks recorded vocals for a song written by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio that will appear on the Osiris Media podcast Sugar Maple, narrated by Fred Savage. Per Jambands.com, the news broke on a recent episode of The Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein‘s Twitter Spaces show The Lively Hour.

During an episode that saw Brownstein interview singer-songwriter Maggie Rose, composer Don Hart stopped by and let everyone in on Trey’s latest song, produced by Chris Gelbuda. The track will appear on Sugar Maple, the first-ever fiction podcast from Osiris Media, the podcast network co-founded by Phish lyricist Tom Marshall.

Narrated by actor and longtime Phish fan Fred Savage, the podcast hosts original compositions from Hart, who began a working relationship with Trey back in 2004 when the guitarist asked the composer to assemble orchestration for “Stash”. According to JamBase, Hart and Anastasio’s collaborations continue to this day and included charts that appeared on Phish’s most recent studio album, 2020’s Sigma Oasis.

Though Hicks is best known for his 2006 victory on American Idol, the singer’s jam band roots run much deeper. During his time at Auburn University, he performed in a Widespread Panic cover band, as well as boarded the second-ever Jam Cruise as a paying passenger in 2004. After achieving national stardom on the FOX singing competition, he returned to Jam Cruise again in 2011 where he sat in with Panic’s JoJo HermannEveryone OrchestraGeorge Porter Jr., and more.

Tom Marshall and his Osiris co-founder RJ Bee will appear on the next episode of The Lively Hour tonight, March 21st, at 8 p.m. ET.
