Umphrey’s McGee launched their three-night RÖCKJAVIK Iceland run on Friday. The concert at Reykjavík’s Eldborg Hall saw UM delivering two nearly seamless sets laced with teases both cover and original.
UM’s Iceland destination run has been a long time coming after being postponed in both 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Umphrey’s McGee took the stage to the opening synth strains of “You Got The Wrong Guy” and soon rocked out on the instrumental before getting into “Plunger.” The band then fit in a “Web Tangle” tease in “White Man’s Moccasins.” Umphrey’s hasn’t played “Web Tangle” in full since August 2013 which marked just the instrumental’s second play.
“Sweetness” emerged from “Moccasins” and headed into “Booth Love.” “Utopian Fir” followed and found its way into the Pink Floyd classic “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” A return to “Utopian Fir,” which contained elements of “Anchor Drops,” capped off the first set.
UM got the second frame going with the classic instrumental “Der Bluten Kat,” which contained a Rolling Stones “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” tease, before heading into “Final Word” and a return to “Der Bluten Kat” to seal the set opening segment. The band then embarked on another continuous section beginning with “Half-Delayed” ahead of the vintage “All In Time,” which saw the band jamming on Santana’s “Se a Cabo” followed by “In The Black.”
Umphrey’s brought the second set to a close with “The Bottom Half” which boasted another “Web Tangle” tease. “Andy’s Last Beer” got the encore underway followed by a pairing of “August” and a return to “All In Time” to bring night one in Iceland to a close.
