Umphrey’s McGee Kicks Off Iceland Run
Umphrey’s McGee finally launched their Reykjavík run after the destination event was postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
Umphrey’s got the concert underway with the lead single, “I Don’t Know What I Want,” off their upcoming album Asking For A Friend. “The Silent Type” fell in the second slot before “Preamble” led into its title track companion from the band’s 2009 album Mantis. “Mantis” would then encompass “Wife Soup” ahead of “Speak Up.”
UM then welcomed Hartswick for “Bullhead City.” Hartswick would duet with guitarist Jake Cinninger on the country-tinged tune before adding some gorgeous vocal stylings of her own ahead of guitarist Brendan Bayliss on the bridge backed up by Jake and JHa as well keyboardist Joel Cummins.
Cinninger then launched the band into “Electric Avenue To Hell,” a mashup of AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell” and Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” as well as the UM original “The Triple Wide,” last time played on November 9, 2019 for a total gap of 117 shows, as per All Thing Umphreys. The Iceland play also marked just the fifth time UM performed the mashup since Halloween 2013. Bayliss sang the lyrics to “Electric Avenue” while Hartswick took over for “Highway To Hell” before the band dropped into “The Triple Wide” with Hartswick continuing the “Highway To Hell” lyrics before UM brought the mashup home to cap off the first frame.

The second set kicked off with the thrashy instrumental “Wizard Burial Ground” followed by the classic “Slacker.” The band then linked up “Night Nurse” and “40s Theme” ahead of another pairing of instrumental “The Pequod” and “Domino Theory.” UM closed out the second set with “Bridgeless.” Umphrey’s McGee returned to encore with “1348,” which contained elements of Miles Davis’ “In A Silent Way,” before heading into the vintage “Hajimemashite” ahead of a return to “1348” to seal night two in Iceland. UM’s Röckjavik wraps up tonight. Livestreams are available via Mandolin.
