Watch Foo Fighters Cover ‘Somebody To Love’ At Taylor Hawkins’ Last Concert

89

The music world is reeling from the loss of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died at age 50 on Friday. The first concert Hawkins attended was a Queen show in 1982 and the show made a huge impact on the 10-year-old budding musician, so it’s only fitting the final song he sang on stage was the British rock band’s “Somebody To Love” as part of Foo Fighters set at Lollapalooza Argentina back on March 20.

“Queen were the first band I ever saw live. It was at Irvine Meadows in California in 1982 [during the Hot Space tour],” Hawkins wrote as part of an essay for Louder Sound. “It was so inspiring that I went home and told my mom that one day I’d play at that venue. I never really believed that shit, but it happened. So, I owe [Queen frontman] Freddie [Mercury] for helping me make a dream come true.”

Taylor Hawkins lived out a number of his Queen dreams over the course of his career. Foo Fighters inducted Queen into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001 and performed “We Will Rock You” and “Tie Your Mother Down” with the band that night. Hawkins and Foo Fighters went on to play five Queen songs at VH1 Rock Honors 2006 in Las Vegas, including “Tie Your Mother Down” with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. One month later Foo Fighters and Queen collaborated once again on “We Will Rock You” and “Tie Your Mother Down” at London’s Hyde Park on June 17, 2006 and reprised the feat at the 2011 iTunes Festival. Hawkins sang “Tie Your Mother Down” each time.

Foo Fighters started covering “Somebody To Love” from Queen’s 1976 studio album A Day At The Races last June and it was a setlist staple ever since. “Somebody To Love” showcased Hawkins’ dynamic stage presence as the drummer would take center stage to provide lead vocals while Dave Grohl hopped behind the kit. Foo Fighters covered the song 33 times over the past two years with the most recent performance coming at Hawkins’ final show.

Foo Fighters delivered a 19-song set at Lollapalooza Argentina last Sunday night. One tune was actually a medley used for band introductions featuring portions of The Who’s “My Generation,” C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” and Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.” Grohl’s Taylor Hawkins intro led into “Somebody To Love” after the drummer received a huge ovation from the massive crowd at Hipódromo de San Isidro.

“I fucking love Dave Grohl, man,” Hawkins said of his best friend. “I’d be delivering pizzas if it wasn’t for fucking Dave Grohl. I’d be managing the drum department at a Guitar Center if it wasn’t for Dave Grohl.” The California native went on to pour his heart and soul into a stellar “Somebody To Love” featuring Grohl pounding the skins.

“Here’s the problem. When Taylor Hawkins sings a song, it’s hard to play after Taylor Hawkins … because he’s the best in the world,” Dave Grohl told the crowd following “Somebody To Love.” Watch Taylor Hawkins’ final show queued up to “Somebody To Love” below:
