Watch Grateful Dead Perform ‘Ollin Arageed’ & ‘Fire On The Mountain’ In Egypt

The Grateful Dead‘s performance incorporating “Ollin Arageed” and “Fire On The Mountain” from their 1978 trip to Egypt is featured as the latest installment of the band’s All The Years live video series. The 17-minute sequence was filmed live at the Giza Plateau pyramid complex in Egypt on September 16, 1978 at the start of Dead’s second set.

Originally proposed by manager Richard Loren, the band headed to Egypt for a three-night stand between September 14 – 16, 1978 as documented on the 2008 live album and concert film Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978. Percussionist Hamza El Din joined the band for performances of his composition “Ollin Arageed” each night. Additionally, The Nubian Youth Choir contributed to the hypnotic tune at the pyramids. The Grateful Dead performed “Ollin Arageed” stateside six times between August 31, 1978 and August 5, 1979.

“One of the most magical events in the Grateful Dead’s entire 30 year trip was their Egypt voyage, and this video captures one of the many special moments that happened when the Dead visited Egypt,” explained GD archivist David Lemieux. “Hamza El Din and his choir performed Ollin Arageed with the Dead accompanying, and the seamless transition into Fire On The Mountain is one of the coolest musical juxtapositions in the Grateful Dead’s history. Perfection personified.”
