Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio extended his stay in Mexico to guest with My Morning Jacket to end the first night of MMJ’s One Big Holiday destination event on Wednesday. While an article with more details and the setlist will follow, video featuring Anastasio’s guest spot with the Louisville-bred rockers has surfaced and can be found below.
Up first for “MMTrey” was a cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man.” Anastasio shared lead vocal duties with My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James on a song MMJ has covered 19 times between 2000 and 2019 as per Setlist.FM. Next, Trey added to the My Morning Jacket debut “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” cover. Jim James handled lead vocals on The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers gem. Both guitarists dueled it out while Carl Broemel swapped his guitar for a sax on the sizzling 10-minute “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.”
My Morning Jacket and Trey Anastasio had one more treat in store for fans at Moon Palace Cancun. Anastasio augmented MMJ on their beloved original “Magheetah.” Trey took a verse and contributed backing vocals to the track from It Still Moves. The six musicians engaged in a feedback jam mid-song that paved the way for blissful improvisation before a raging conclusion.
