Widespread Panic continued their three-night run at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas on Saturday. WSP dusted off “Travelin’ Man” toward the end of the first set.
The concert got underway with keyboardist JoJo Hermann leading the band through “Greta” — last night marked the eve of JoJo’s 30th anniversary with the band — ahead of a cover of Bobby Rush’s “Bowlegged Woman.” Standalone versions of “Bear’s Gone Fishin’,” “Better Off” and “Shut Up And Drive” followed ahead of a pairing of “Radio Child” and JJ Cale’s “Travelin’ Light.”
The band kept up the travelin’ tunes with a bust out of “Travelin’ Man.” WSP last played the Michael Houser-penned number on October 25, 2019 in Milwaukee for a total gap of 54 shows, as per Panic Stream. Widespread Panic included Mikey’s “Travelin’ Man” on their 2003 album Ball, their first following Houser’s death. The LP arrived on April 15, 2003 and the band would live debut the song shortly after the LP’s release on May 2, 2003 in New Orleans, as per Everyday Companion. “Travelin’ Man” then led into “The Waker” to close out the first frame.
WSP launched the second set with a coupling of “Thought Sausage” and the classic “Henry Parsons Died.” The 18th iteration of “Dark Day Program” followed. The lion’s share of the performances of the song came during the year it was debuted, 2008, and the band shelved the number in the teens. Panic revived the tune after nearly a decade on February 28, 2020, which was also the last performance before Vegas.
Following “Proving Ground,” the band delivered their cover of Tom Petty’s “Honeybee,” which the group unveiled following Petty’s death in October 2017. “Honeybee” then led into the favorite “Surprise Valley” which in turn gave way to “Drums” ahead of a return to “Surprise Valley.”
The frequently paired Vic Chesnutt songs “Protein Drink” and “Sewing Machine” — which also appear together on a 1995 album by brute (a band featuring the late Vic Chesnutt and members of WSP) Nine High A Pallet — followed before WSP wrapped up the first set with a two-song segment consisting of “Papa’s Home” and the Neil Young-penned Buffalo Springfield number “Mr. Soul.” Widespread Panic returned to encore with “Visiting Day” and the early Grateful Dead tune, “Cream Puff War.”
