Widespread Panic had a big surprise in store to conclude Sunday’s concert in Las Vegas, which came on the 30th anniversary of keyboardist JoJo Hermann‘s first show as a member of the band. The sextet ended a three-night stand at The Theater at Virgin Hotels with their debut cover of The Beatles classic “Dear Prudence.”
“Dear Prudence” shared the encore slot with “Hope In A Hopeless World” after two sets heavy on songs showcasing JoJo. Last night’s opening frame began with “One Arm Steve” and the beloved “Walk On” by Neil Young featuring a taste of “Turn On Your Love Light.” Next, Panic jammed “Rebirtha” into “Postcard” via JJ Cale’s “Cocaine” and performed covers of Alan Price’s “Sell Sell” and Bloodkin’s “Trashy.” The latter gave way to “You Got Yours” before Widespread Panic offered their first standalone “Dark Bar.” Each previous “Dark Bar,” dating back to its debut in 2008, came within “Goodpeople.” WSP closed out the set with “Love Tractor.”
Widespread Panic returned to kick off Sunday’s second set with “Old Neighborhood.” Guitarist John Bell then led his mates through the contemplative “Jack” and worked a “Her Body Needs No Dance” rap into the ensuing “Diner.” Last night’s “Diner” began a seamless segment that also included “Pilgrims” and “You Should Be Glad” as well as “Smokestack Lightning” and “Contentment Blues.” The section connecting “Pilgrims” and “You Should Be Glad” featured wild runs from Hermann and was dubbed “JoJo Meltdown” on the band’s setlist. Panic went on to jam Jorma Kaukonen’s “Genesis” into a rousing “Fishwater” to end the sixth and final set of this year’s Vegas run.
John Bell handled vocals on the “Dear Prudence” that along with “Hope In A Hopeless World” served as the evening’s encore. The Beatles originally released “Dear Prudence” on their 1968 double album The Beatles, aka The White Album. Guitarist Jimmy Herring took a long and emotion-filled solo to bring the cover debut, concert and run to an end. Next up for Widespread Panic are three nights in St. Augustine, Florida later this month.
