Little Feat presided over a guest-filled New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival set on this date 23 years ago. Feat would welcome Louisiana legend Sonny Landreth, Taj Mahal’s Mick Weaver, the Texicalli Horns and more.
The Little Feat lineup at the time consisted of longtime members keyboardist Bill Payne, guitarist Paul Barrere, drummer Richie Hayward, percussionist Sam Clayton and bassist Kenny Gradney as well as multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett and vocalist Shaun Murphy. The music of Louisiana and New Orleans was a huge influence on Little Feat and can be heard beginning on their landmark 1973 LP, Dixie Chicken, and the band certainly highlighted that sound for their Jazz Fest set.
Feat kicked off their set with a fitting “Cajun Rage” from their 1995 album Ain’t Had Enough Fun. The band then welcomed the first guest of the evening, harmonica player Pete Marietta to add some harp on “Hate To Lose Your Lovin’” from Little Feat’s 1988 come back album Let It Roll.
The Texicalli Horns then joined in for another Louisiana appropriate tune, “Rad Gumbo,” from Feat’s 1990 album Representing Mambo. Texicalli stayed on for “Calling The Children Home” and a cover of Ike and Tina Turner’s “A Fool In Love” helmed by Murphy. The horns would also stay on as Little Feat got into Lowell George era tunes including the Barrere-co-penned “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” and a massive 17-minute jam on “Dixie Chicken,” which also saw slide guitar ace Sonny Landreth and keyboardist Mick Weaver getting in on the fun with Marietta returning as well.
Feat then went it alone for “On Your Way Down,” penned by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint. Lowell George collaborated with Toussaint on Robert Palmer’s 1974 debut solo album Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley and Toussaint no doubt influenced the Los Angeles-formed Feat’s NOLA sound. After “Hi Roller,” the Texicalli Horns returned for “Oh Atlanta” and stuck around for “Homeground” and “Texas Twister,” which also featured Marietta. Little Feat once again went it alone for “Blues Don’t Tell it All” before Landreth, Texicalli and Marietta returned for “Let It Roll” to close out the set. Little Feat encored with a fitting “Cajun Girl” to bring the stellar festival slot to a close.
