75

Jack White wrapped up an eventful weekend in his hometown of Detroit on Saturday with a pair of live song debuts from his 2022 solo releases Fear Of The Dawn, which arrived on Friday, and the upcoming Entering Heaven Alive. Friday saw Jack and his band performing the National Anthem at the Detroit Tigers home opener before kicking off the Supply Chain Issues Tour at the Masonic Temple Theatre Detroit that night where the guitarist married his girlfriend and opener Olivia Jean.

White launched Saturday’s show with Fear Of The Dawn lead single “Taking Me Back” ahead of the title track. Jack then turned to White Stripes material with “Black Math” and “Apple Blossom.” The recently dusted off cover of U2’s “Love Is Blindness” followed ahead of the favorite “Love Interruption,” from White’s 2012 solo debut, Blunderbuss.

White then slung on a bass for the White Stripes’ “My Doorbell,” on which he often plays piano, followed by the Blunderbuss cut “Freedom At 21.” The singer-songwriter then debuted Fear Of The Dawn song “What’s The Trick?” ahead of a bust out of Little Willie John’s “I’m Shakin,” last time played on Conan in 2012 with the Detroit play marking just the second live rendition and first at a concert, as per SetlistFM.

Jack then offered “Over And Over And Over” from his 2018 LP, Boarding House Reach, before dusting off “Temporary Ground,” from 2014’s Lazaretto, for the first time in seven years. White then unveiled “Queen Of The Bees” from his upcoming record, Entering Heaven Alive, due out in July. Jack released “Queen Of The Bees” as the B-side to Fear Of The Dawn single “Hi-De-Ho” featuring Q-Tip. The guitarist closed out the main set with a pair of White Stripes tunes “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” and “The Hardest Button to Button.”

Jack White then delivered a career-spanning, eight-song encore which went heavy on Lazaretto and also featured a Raconteurs song as well as White Stripes tunes beginning with the title track to Lazaretto followed by Whites Stripes’ “I Think I Smell A Rat” from their landmark 2001 album White Blood Cells. The sole Ranconteurs song of the evening came in the form of “Steady, As She Goes” followed by Lazaretto’s “That Black Bat Licorice” and a piece of “Cannon” from The Stripes’ 1999 self-titled debut. “Sixteen Saltines” from Blunderbuss came next ahead of Lazaretto’s “High Ball Stepper.” Jack White concluded the concert with the classic closer and Stripes anthem, “Seven Nation Army.”
