Mdou Moctar Announces ‘Afrique Refait’ Remix Album & Shares Single

Mdou Moctar detailed a remix album, Afrique Refait, of their 2021 LP, Afrique Victime, set to arrive via Matador on April 19. The band from Niger led by guitarist Mahamadou “Mdou Moctar” Souleymane previewed the remix record with “Taliat,” reimagined by Congolese artists Rey Sapienz and MC Dougis.

Afrique Refait boasts remixes from “sound-makers at the vanguard of electronic music in Africa,” press materials for the remix album noted, “with a view of highlighting different scenes across the continent. Many of the artists are associated with pioneering Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes who were vital to the making of the project.”

Artists from the Nyege Nyege Tapes label included the aforementioned Rey Sapienz and MC Dougis along with Kabeaushe and Chrisman. Afrique Refait also contains contributions from Jay Mitta, Tommy T, MC Yallah, Debmaster, Duma, Yugen Blakrock, Aya Metwalli and DJ Diaki.

Mdou Moctar bassist and producer Mikey Coltun detailed working with artists from Nyege Nyege Tapes including Rey Sapienz, who offered the remix for Afrique Refait lead single “Taliat” — the original song was also a single off Afrique Victime — featuring MC Dougis:

Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis, Kabeaushe and Chrisman are all artists I was previously unaware of before working on this project. These artists were presented by the amazing Nyege Nyege Tapes label and were all essential in completing the Afrique Victime Remix project. While a lot of the artists previously chosen came from either East, West or North Africa, Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis and Chrisman showcase all the cool shit coming out of Central Africa – The Congo.
