A new outdoor amphitheater called The Sunset is under development in Colorado Springs. Offering picturesque views of the sun setting over Pikes Peak behind the stage at the start of each concert, the proposed 8,000-capacity man-made shed has drawn comparisons to nearby Red Rocks Amphitheatre, but the developer has been clear that his intention is not to compete with the iconic Morrison natural amphitheater.

“I’m not building this to be competitive with Red Rocks, or to be competitive with anybody,” said JW Roth, Founder and Chairman of the company behind The Sunset, Notes Live. “I’m building it to be complementary to the music culture and to the arts culture. … I want it to be something the community enjoys. And [I’m] in no way trying to be competitive with Denver. Colorado Springs doesn’t have anything quite like this.”

The proposed location for The Sunset is part of the Polaris Point development project off I-25 located near the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. In addition to the titular sunsets over Pikes Peak, the venue will be flanked on each side by Air Force’s Falcon Stadium and the iconic Air Force chapel.

The Sunset will feature luxurious amenities including 60 VIP suites, each with its own fire pit to keep fans warm, premium four- and five-star restaurants, and a chophouse with a rooftop bar offering “over 150 of the rarest bourbons in the world.” The $40 million venue is being developed by Notes Live, a new live music company dedicated to serving “entertainment deserts” where there are growing populations but no high-quality venues. The company has venues coming to Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Texas as well.

“These are some of the fastest-growing cities in America, but the live entertainment options haven’t caught up to the population,” Roth said. “Notes Live venues will cater to these upscale demographics looking for a place where the overall experience is as good as the music itself.”

The Sunset could be ready to open in September 2023 if construction goes as planned, with a full schedule of performances by the summer of 2024. Stay tuned for further updates, and for more information, head here.
