French Quarter Festival 2022 wrapped up on Sunday after a long weekend of free performances from artists including Tank and the Bangas, George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners, Corey Henry & the Treme Funktet, and more.
Billed as the largest showcase of Louisiana music in the world, French Quarter Festival was founded in 1984 as a way to bring residents back to New Orleans’s French Quarter, aka the Vieux Carré, following the World’s Fair and extensive sidewalk repairs in the neighborhood. The festival is produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI), a 501c(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting the Vieux Carré and the city of New Orleans with events and activities that “showcase the culture and heritage of the city, contribute to the economic well-being of the community, and instill increased pride in the people of New Orleans,” according to the festival’s website. FQFI also hosts Satchmo SummerFest and Holidays New Orleans Style each year.
French Quarter Festival 2022 featured some of New Orleans’s finest talent on more than 20 stages throughout the French Quarter. From jazz, funk, R&B, and zydeco to folk, gospel, Latin, and cabaret, myriad musical genres were represented alongside culinary offerings from some of the city’s best restaurants.
Some notable performances included New Orleans staples Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Soul Rebels, guitarist/producer Papa Mali, and Washboard Chaz Blues Trio. Another highlight was when NOLA funk legend and Meters bassist George Porter Jr. introduced his great-granddaughter, hinting that the future of the city is looking bright.
