Today, Railroad Earth released their highly anticipated Anders Osborne-produced album, All For The Song. The New Jersey-based, folk-flavored hobo jam band travelled to New Orleans to get away and focus on recording new material after the untimely passing of founding member Andy Goessling. The album beautifully displays both the grief that served as inspiration and the syncretic spirit of The Big Easy where it was recorded.
Featuring ten tracks including previously released singles “The Great Divide”, “Come and Go Moon”, and “It’s So Good”, All For The Song is the band’s first studio album since 2017’s Captain Nowhere. After experiencing a terrible shakeup when multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling succumbed to cancer in 2018, the band charted a new path, and in 2019, they announced they were working on a new record with producer and solo artist in his own right Anders Osborne. The record was originally due out in 2020, but did not debut until two years later.
Although the compositions hold true to Railroad Earth’s bluegrass roots and rock n roll spirit, with poignant, contemplative lyrics replete with allusions to nature, the band embraced new influences and a new process for their latest work, calling it a “destination” record.
“From the beginning, the vision was more than just the music,” said guitarist/lead singer Todd Sheaffer. “We looked at this like a ‘destination’ record. Our past records were all made close to home or, in fact, at home. Andy’s passing was very much in the center of our thoughts and our hearts in the writing and recording of this album. Things were so shaken up that we thought it’d be a benefit to go away from all of the distractions and be together. In New Orleans, there is great food and there are great spirits to be shared. I’ll leave the music part of the equation for others to judge, but we surely succeeded in making the bonding part of the vision come to fruition!”
