UPDATE: Dead & Company To Stop Touring After 2022

77

Dead & Company will purportedly stop touring after 2022, Rolling Stone reports. D&C just announced 2022 tour dates for summer and tickets went on sale this morning.

Reasons as to why Dead & Company — guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti — are calling it quits remain unclear. Rolling Stone also stated that the band’s management declined to comment on the decision.

RS did note that “Deadheads have often speculated how many more tours the band would embark on, [and] rumors had been circling among fans recently that this tour would be the last.” Perhaps contributing to those rumors is Kreutzmann having to drop out of a number of shows on D&C’s 2021 summer tour.

Mayer seems to have been under the impression that Dead & Company would continue indefinitely even after the surviving members chose to or could no longer tour. In an interview for the AXS TV program Sammy Hagar’s Rock & Roll Road Trip recorded in 2017 — two years after D&C began — and posted to YouTube in Fall 2021, Mayer related his thoughts on what he believed Weir’s vision for the future of D&C might be.

“To hear Bob Weir talk about it, he wants this to continue after they’re [the surviving members of the Grateful Dead] are done touring.” It seems the outlook in that regard has changed.
