The Black Crowes Announce ‘1972’ Covers EP & Share ‘Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone’ Single

The Black Crowes will release a covers EP, 1972, made up of their recordings of classic rock ‘n’ roll songs that came out in 1972. The six-song set will stream exclusively on Amazon Music on May 4 as well as be available on LP and CD on May 6 through the band’s Silver Arrow label.

The Black Crowes previewed 1972 with their cover of The Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone.” The song originally appeared on The Temptations’ 1972 album, All Directions. The EP also presents covers of The Rolling Stones’ “Rocks Off,” T. Rex’s “The Slider,” Rod Stewart’s “You Wear It Well,” Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” and David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.”

The Black Crowes recorded 1972 in January at the famed Sunset Sound recording studio in Los Angeles. Frontman Chris Robinson revealed the band was at work on the project when The Black Crowes debuted covers of “Rocks Off” and “Moonage Daydream” at their shows in February in Las Vegas.

“The year 1972 was a watershed moment, some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs ever made came out of that year,” Chris Robinson said in a press release. “To get our band back together in the studio, it had to be a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll. This record is about love and devotion to something that makes us feel good. We hope that it makes fans around the world feel the same.”
