The Music Does Stop: Dead and Co announce 2022 finale

I guess the Music does stop at some point. Or Does it?

Rolling Stone is reporting that Dead and Company will finish out 2022 and then the ensemble will be done. As of this moment though, there is no confirmation from the band or management.

Bob Weir seems to be personally denying the rumor from his verified twitter account:

Will Rolling Stone have to retract that statement? Or will they just face ire from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer for spilling the beans?

“If You Get Confused Listen to the Music Play.”

Was this just an elaborate Grateful Death Hoax? Rolling Stone updated their article about four hours after their initial posting:

UPDATE: Sources close to Dead and Company initially claimed that 2022 will be the last year the band tours together. However, after guitarist Bob Weir tweeted his surprise about Dead and Company suspending touring, the same sources changed their tune and say discussions continue about the fate of the band. The band itself said in a statement: “Dead & Company has made no official decision as to this being their final tour.”

Whew,” drummer Bill Kreutzmann tweeted to Weir. “I thought you knew something that I didn’t! “#themusicneverstops #wewillsurvive.”

This story has become as much about Rolling Stone as it ever was about Dead and Company. Fans have become accustomed to End of an Era stories, and more than most bands have proven dexterous and adept at changing. For a band known for improvisation, this is no surprise.

Dead and Company is only the latest in a long list of post Jerry Garcia bands containing members of the Grateful Dead. This ensemble featured Bob Weir and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart alongside John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti. Other prior bands included the Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur, Billy & the Kids, and Bob Weir taking his show on the road with his latest project The Wolf Brothers.

If one had to guess, the Wolf Brothers is the most likely direction that Weir will steer this Ship of Fools. Expanding from an initial trio lineup of Don Was on bass and Jay Lane on drums, more recent versions of the band have included Chimenti on keys along with significant horn sections. Dates this spring with that ensemble have included some really fascinating shows incorporating all sorts of accompaniment.
